Project One: Color Theory

For this project I was exploring color theory through pop art. Our assignment was to create 3 oil art posters similar to Andy Warhol using different color schemes. I mixed Warhol’s style with Roy Lichtenstein’s (Ben Day dots) to create three posters. I first imaged traced a picture of Scarlett Johansson then used the blob brush in illustrator to begin filling in the color. I worked off one piece and then duplicated it and changed the colors to fit each color scheme. My color scheme was inspired by popular colors in the 1950s (when Pop Art began). I made a pattern for the Ben-Day dots and overlaid it onto the skin only so it wasn’t overwhelming.

In my revision process I added shadowing to the image to add dimension.

I did the same process on a portrait of myself although this time just using the blob brush. In the end I came up with a style that looked very camouflaged which I liked.

Project Two: Screen Printing

In this assignment I made a t-shirt design for my university, Washington State University (WSU). I decided to continue on with the pop art movement in this t-shirt and used the Ben Day dots once again. I went for a more athletic version using a heavy font and adding the schools logo in the bottom right hand corner.

It was a competition between be and our other intern and whoever won would get their t-shirt printed and sold in the local store. We both ended up winning and getting our shirts printed!

Project Three: Type Face

Our fourth assignment was to create a custom typeface. I chose to design a slab serif font and place a transparent brush stroke below the letters. I named my font "Progress" because I feel like the brush stroke speaks to creativity and with creative endeavors there is always progress.

Project Four: Layout Design

I was inspired to make a beach themed layout focused around creativity. I downloaded a fun brushed font which I used for the headings and accent text. I edited all the images and added a grain to make them a cohesive color scheme throughout the pages.

I made everything in Adobe Photoshop from the doodles to the Polaroids. I made the Polaroids individually in Photoshop and added some shadowing to make the Polaroids look realistic and slightly raised from the paper.

I also added the design on the skater's shirt which I made in Photoshop. I added grain to it and reduced the opacity so it looked like it was actually a part of his shirt.

Project Five-Six: Personal Branding

In our next project we worked on our personal brands. I wanted to go with a retro script font that conveys a fun and creative vibe while also being timeless. Retro script fonts remind of old surfing posters or car show posters. I love both of these and felt that this type of font really represents me.

For the rest of my branding guide I stuck with a fun tropical vibe which is represented in the colors and font. I loved how it turned out and had so much fun with the project.
